The Concrete Prairie

I tried something new in reviewing for the upcoming exam. Actually, the class structure (or lesson plan) was not really any different from past reviews: Divide into groups, provide exercises for the groups to work on, have the groups report on their work.
The new component of today’s class was its location. We moved from the classroom out to a large area outside the Moody Science Building (which houses the Math Department) called the Concrete Prairie. That name comes from the fact that it is an enormous concrete covered area between the Science Building, the Library and the University Center. Each student was given a piece of sidewalk chalk and worked their problems out on the prairie. Despite having to recess to the shade at regular intervals, it provided a nice change of pace that I don’t imagine many of the students will forget. As for the material we covered, that may be another story, but I certainly hope not.

Your students said that was more fun than sitting inside and doing the work.
Love the idea! Cool!
